About Our Funeral Homes

The funeral home was established in an 1850′s Victorian mansion home once owned by Andrew Kipple, one of the early executives of the Pennsylvania Railroad.  In 1981, the Santella family expanded their service in Altoona with the purchase of a second location at 1520 4th Street – the Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home.

In 1983, they created the Lighthouse Library Funeral Information Center to help inform the community of the many aspects of funeral service.  Presentations are made throughout the year to individual families, students, colleges, senior citizen and organizational groups.  These presentations and materials are provided free as a public service to our community.

In 1993, they completed a renovation project took place to restore the unique history of the funeral home.

In addition, a Heritage Room was created at the 8th Ave location to commemorate the cultural and historical significance of Altoona and surrounding areas.

In 2007, they also created the Axe and Santella Family Chapel to provide more options in funeral service.

Conscious of the trust placed in them by generations of area families, the Santella family endeavors in every way to ease the pain an bereavement of the family members who they serve.
