John A. Massaro Sr.

April 15, 1925 - Jan. 19, 2016

John A. Massaro Sr., 90, Altoona, passed away Tuesday at the Altoona Center for Nursing Care.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late James and Donata (Rubino) Massaro.

Surviving are four children: Steven (Carol) of Martinsburg, Darlene (Scott) MacDonald of Gainesville, Va., John Jr. and Bruce (Kelley), both of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Mara, Teia and Jena Massaro, Jeremy (Kara) Chaplin, Brinley Finch, Gunner MacDonald and Brian (Rachel) Massaro; eight great-grandchildren: Emily, Aaron, Ethan, Abbie and Eli Chaplin, Alexa and Xavier Finch, Orian Wigfield and Thor MacDonald; two step-grandsons: Dennis (Susan) and Daniel (Barbara) Showalter; and a step-great-grandson, Tyler Showalter.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

John served in the U.S. Army as a private first class in Company A 597th Signal Air Warning Battalion during WWII. He received the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with a bronze star. John was a fan of Altoona High School sports.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 21, 2016, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, at the funeral home. Committal will full military honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
