Barry Christopher Mergardt

Barry Christopher Mergardt, 77, Altoona, passed away Monday at Maybrook Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in New York City, N.Y., son of the late Edward Barry and Marie (Sullivan) Mergardt.

Surviving are a sister, Mercedes Mergardt Nugent of Greenwich, Conn.; a brother, Kevin Xavier Mergardt of Napa, Calif.; a nephew, Bruce Edward Nugent; and three nieces: Laura Mercedes Nugent, Olivia Marie Mergardt and Vanessa Marie Mergardt.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Michael Mergardt.

Barry was a 1957 graduate with honors of Jesuit Fordham Preparatory School, New York City, N.Y. In 1961, he graduated from Georgetown University, Washington D.C. with a B.A. in American History.

From 1961-79, he was employed by Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P), where he was vice president of East Coast Produce Purchasing. In 1979, he moved to Altoona, where he purchased the company Cartwright Produce with his business partner and great friend, Vince Cartwright.

He loved politics, meteorology, traveling to Greenwich, Conn. for family holidays and to Boston for the summers, and going to Penn State games. Barry was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan as well as a train enthusiast who enjoyed Altoona's Railroad history.

Barry will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was always so full of life and optimistic about each day.

Friends will be received from 9:30 until the 11 a.m. Catholic funeral service, Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona. Committal will be held at Grandview Cemetery, Altoona.
