Hobert W. ‘Bert’ Hobbs Sr.

July 9, 1939-Jan. 30, 2016

Hobert “Bert” W. Hobbs Sr.,76, of Altoona passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at

Garvey Manor after a fierce battle against metastatic cancer. Bert was born July 9, 1939, son of the late George and Gladys(Robbins) Hobbs outside of Pineville, Kentucky and was a graduate of Central High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.

After graduating, Bert enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country from 1957 to 1965. Bert, a disabled veteran, served on the USS McGinty destroyer escort when it was deployed to the Far East to patrol the northern station of the Taiwan Strait with the ships of the 7th Fleet. While stationed at the Naval Reserve, he met the love of his life, Patricia "Mickey" Chiarieri. Bert and Mickey were married on September 12, 1964 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. Bert and Mickey raised two children, Jody and Bert Jr., in Pleasant Valley.

During his career, Bert held a variety of positions, most notably serving as Vice President of Operations at Sky Brothers. Recently, Bert enjoyed driving "his kids" to and from school on a special needs van for the Altoona School District.

Bert cherished his family and sadly leaves behind his wife, Mickey, their daughter, Jody Hobbs of Philadelphia and her husband, Jim Pifer, and their children, Jessica and James. Bert is also survived by his son, Bert Jr. of Marietta, his wife, Kelly, and their children, Justin and Skylar.

Bert was an avid golfer and a member of Park Hills Country Club. He loved his time on the golf course almost as much as he loved the time he spent with his wife and family.

Friends will be received at the 10:30 am Mass celebrated on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with military honors to follow. At the family's request in lieu of flowers, donations in Bert's honor may be made to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Restoration Fund, 806 11th Street, Altoona, PA 16602 or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Arrangements by Santella Funeral Home
