Jayne E. Parrish

Jayne E. Parrish, 71, Antis Township, passed away Thursday at UPMC Pittsburgh, due to complications arising from an extended illness.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Thomas C. and Betty Jean (Hartman) Yingling.

Surviving are her husband, with whom she shared 48 years of marriage, Gibbs A. of Tyrone; a son, Thomas George at home; a daughter, Jennifer (Todd) Dutrow; a granddaughter, Rachel Jean Dutrow; a sister, Patsy (Mark) Brightman of Lunenberg, Mass.; a niece, Talie Jean Dussault and her son, Douglas, of Bedford, Mass.; and a niece, Elizabeth Braman of Los Angeles, Calif.

Jayne held a bachelor’s degree from Saint Francis University and a master’s degree from Penn State University. She was a school teacher and began her career teaching high school English at Queen Anne County High School on Eastern Shore, Maryland. After her marriage, she taught high school English in central New Jersey. After moving back to Pennsylvania, she waitressed at Wissinger’s 31st St. Market and worked as a secretary in Justice Camberg’s office while she earned her master’s degree. She taught English at the Cathedral School in Altoona and worked with the Learning Support Team at D.S. Keith Junior High School. Jayne went on to earn reading specialist credentials and then taught reading at Ebner, Wright and Penn-Lincoln Elementary Schools for the Altoona Area School District. All in all, Jayne taught every single grade, either as an English or reading teacher, which gave her so much joy.

Jayne was Catholic and participated in serving funeral dinners with the Christian Mothers at Our Lady of Lourdes and Holy Rosary parishes in the city. She sang in the choir at both churches and was a reader for Holy Rosary Church. Jayne was famous for her homemade, ribbon-winning wines.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 2019, at Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2019, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 900 N. Fourth St., Altoona, Father Ronald Osinski officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.
