John L. Dunn

John L. Dunn, 97, passed away Saturday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late William and Susan (Wertz) Dunn, and was one of 13 children. He married Patricia A. Santella, who preceded him in death on July 24, 1989.

Surviving are three children: Susan (Edward) Miller of Altoona, Patrick (Barbara) Dunn of Hollidaysburg and Maureen (Guy) Houghtaling of York; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, to whom he was a loving grandfather; and a daughter-in-law, Debbie Dunn of Altoona. He also was a special uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons: John Lynn Dunn and Craig R. Dunn; and two grandsons: Michael Dunn and Matthew Miller.

John was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and he served as a troop carrier pilot during WWII. He served in India, Burma, Southern France, Naples, Rome and Central Europe. He was a decorated pilot and completed 217 combat missions during his 17 months of service. His decorations and citations include Presidential Unit Citation, Europe-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with nine Battle Stars, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Battle Star.

In 1980, John retired from Conrail Car Shop after 32 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona.

Throughout the years, John could be seen at many local sporting events, and he enjoyed the time spent with his family. He will be greatly missed by many.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona. Committal with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
