Maria ‘Lena’ DeCriscio

Dec. 7, 1924- Jan. 12, 2016

Maria Pasqualena Concetta "Lena" DeCriscio, 91, Chesterfield, Mich., formerly of Altoona, passed from time to eternity Tuesday at home, where she received hospice care administered by her children and daughter-in-law, Lisa.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of Dominic and Theresa (Bruno) Manocchio. She was formerly married to the late Frank DeCriscio.

Surviving are three sons: Michael of Kernersville, N.C., Frank of Sebring, Fla., and Albert (Lisa) of China, Mich.; two daughters: Marie (Gary) Stover and Barbara (John) Cole, both of Warren, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two special nephews: Dominic Manocchio and "Bobby" DeCriscio; a close cousin, Eleanor Altiero; and a longtime companion, Rudof Peischl.

She was preceded in death by six brothers: Mike, Phil, Blaise "Bee," Al, John and Tony; two sisters: Carmella and infant Pasqualena; a son, David in 1977; and a grandson, Robert Morgan in 1994. She was the last immediate survivor of her family.

Lena was a 1943 graduate of Altoona High School, and she never missed a football game. She always cared for her children despite difficult times. She was a very outspoken, strong-willed woman and had a memory that amazed everyone. She enjoyed sending and receiving greeting cards, dining out, playing rummy and especially watching the Detroit Tigers play baseball. On Sundays, all would gather at her house for pasta - she would make a simple yet delicious ragout and wonderful meatballs. She will be greatly missed by all.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Altoona. Committal will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
