Sarah J. ‘Sally’ Wharton

Sarah J. “Sally” Wharton, 83, Altoona, passed away Wednesday at UPMC Altoona.

She was born in Munson, daughter of the late Albert and Mary Jane (Scott) Simm. On Aug. 20, 1955, she married Joseph A. Wharton.

Surviving are her loving husband of 61 years; seven children: Gregory (Connie) of Altoona, Joe (Carolyn) of Pittsburgh, Jeffrey (Brenda) in Florida, Janice (Rick) Niewola in Virginia, John (Dena) in Washington, Mary Skiba of State College and Christopher in North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters: Thelma Thompson in Ohio, Mary Ellen Stagner of Harrisburg and Charlotte Mucha in New York; and two stepbrothers: Samuel Lidget of Clearfield and William Lidget of Wellaceton.

Sally was a graduate of Morris Township High School. She retired from American Greetings after 25 years of service. She had also worked as a school transport driver for 19 years.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Altoona, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary. She volunteered at UPMC Altoona and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2017, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Altoona, the Rev. Allan Thomas celebrant. Committal will be at Logan Valley Cemetery.
