Andrew M. Pirro Sr.

March 7, 1923 - May 6, 2015

Andrew M. Pirro Sr., 92, Altoona, passed away Wednesday at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Pasquale and Anna Marie (Valiente) Pirro. He married Antonette Joan Vestri on June 25, 1949.

Surviving are his loving wife; a daughter, Linda Skupien and husband, Donald; a son, Andrew M. Jr. and wife, Michele; three grandchildren: Tammy Skupien, David and his wife Jillian and Annette Pirro; and two great-grandchildren: Dane Pirro and Noah Rutherford.

Andrew was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School and completed a one-year course in drafting and blueprint reading at Altoona Area Vo-Tech School as an adult. He also took a correspondence course in fundamentals of design at Penn State University.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from February 1943 to November 1945 during WWII. He served as a radio intercept operator in the 116th Signal Radio Intelligence Company, which was attached to Patton's 3rd Army and the 12th Army in England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. He was awarded four campaign stars and the Bronze Star. He retired from Conrail in February 1986 as an A-rate leadman sheet metal worker in locomotive wreck repair.

Andrew was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and a previous member of the A&J Iaia American Legion Post. He enjoyed gardening, doing home repairs, riding his tractor and playing his accordion.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2015, at Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Committal will be at Calvary Mausoleum with full military honors.
