Ann J. ‘Nunnie’ Johnson

Ann J. "Nunnie" Johnson, 92, Altoona, passed away Thursday at Amber Terrace at Altoona Center for Nursing Care.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Frank and Margherita (Coppola) Pagnotta. She married William L. Johnson on April 18, 1942, and he passed away April 22, 2002.

Surviving are two daughters: Cheryl Lane Gutzwiller and husband, Jack, of Altoona and Margherita Swanhart of Altoona; a granddaughter, Erica Bowser and husband, Danny, of Altoona; two great-granddaughters: Madison Lane and Cameryn Lane; as well as loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters: Victoria, Mary and Carmella.

Ann was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School and retired at the age of 88 from the City of Altoona as a school crossing guard. Known as "the original" crossing guard, she safely ushered several generations of schoolchildren across Broad Avenue during her 58 years of faithful service.

Ann was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and she enjoyed spending time with her loving family, especially her great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, at Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

In memory of Ann, donations may be given to the American Heart Association.
