Janis D. Brawand

December 23, 1935 – January 5, 2016

It is with sadness that the children of Janis (Davis) Brawand and William H. Brawand, of Wilcox, Pa. announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Janis.

Janis passed away at her home in Altoona, Pa. on January 5, 2016. She was dedicated to God; her five children: Tammy Brawand of Wilcox, Pa., Terry (Ray) Brawand-Buck of Irving, Tx., Lisa (Joseph) Brawand-Purvis of Raleigh, NC, Melissa Brawand of Wilcox, Pa., and Kimberly Brawand-Tecak of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and her three grandchildren: Trista Tecak, Justina (Nick) Onuscheck, and Jacob Tecak. She will be greatly missed by us all. She was a loving mother and grandmother, with the sweetest laugh.

Janis was born in Emporium, Pa. on December 23, 1935 to Leon Harold and Vivian Veronica (Baker-Miller) Davis. She had two sisters, Joannie Miller and Phyllis (Davis) Stanko, of Kane, Pa., all of whom have preceded her in death. Janis has a lovely niece, Diane Stanko-Smith of Pittsburgh, Pa., and also niece Laurie and nephew Joey Stanko of Kane, Pa. who also have preceded her in death (children of Stephen and Phyllis Stanko).

Janis’s family moved to Port Allegany, Pa., where she loved her early childhood with her parents and grandmother, Chloe (Miller) Baker. The Davis family moved to Wilcox, Pa. in the 1940s.

Janis was very active in the Wilcox High School and still has many friends in the area (Dollie S., Rose F., Earla L., Marlene C. & Marlene M., Dorrie M., Becky S., and many more). Our special thoughts are with her friends at this difficult time. While in high school, she served as an officer, a cheerleader, and a majorette. Below is her high school picture. Janis later attended business college and worked in the area until her retirement.

After retirement, Janis moved to the Altoona, Pa. area. She was loved by those in her retirement community, church, and neighborhood. The family would like to thank the outstanding staff at the Altoona Housing Authority and Blair Senior Services. We would like to also thank the hundreds of friends that came to meet us while we were taking care of Mom’s final needs. It was really wonderful to know how many people loved her. We wish we could name all of you.

A special thanks to the staff of Gary’s Groceries, Thompson’s Pharmacy, Reliance Bank, Santella Funeral Home (your kindness to our Mother went above-and-beyond), and also the Altoona Police Department and AMED who took gentle care of our Mother. We appreciate your service. In closing, her children would like to thank her lovely friends in her retirement community and church fellowship. The wonderful stories you shared with us about Mom will be cherished. She truly loved you and talked about you often. We wish you the very best.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. If you wish, donations may be made in Janis’s memory to Wilcox Public Library, 105 Clarion Street, Wilcox, PA 15870 or Blair Senior Services, 1320 12th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601.
