Louis Anthony Torso

Sept. 23, 1924 - March 19, 2015

Louis Anthony Torso, 90, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, passed away Thursday evening at the home.

He was born in Altoona, son of Luigi and Santella (Cacchio) Torso. He married his beautiful wife, Elizabeth N. Roccio, on June 27, 1953.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, during which he and his wife were blessed with four beautiful daughters and sons-in-law: Regina, Tina Buck (Patrick) and Sheila Frederick (Mike), all of Duncansville, and Lisa Frye (Jeff) of Altoona; and five grandchildren: Dustin Buck, Aubrey Frederick and Joshua, Austin and Carson Frye.

He was preceded in death by four brothers: Urban, Mike, Joseph and Alfred; and five sisters: Mary, Edith, Rose, Dorothy and Rita.

Louis grew up on old Dutch Hill, where he had the nickname "Chalky." As a young boy, he sold newspapers on Eleventh Avenue and shined shoes at Boston Hat Cleaners in the Brett Building.

Louis served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. He then served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1942-45 as a Gunner's Mate Third Class and from 1947-50 as a Seaman First Class. Louis worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for five years, for the post office in Altoona for 38 years, for Pacifico Bakery for a year and for his son-in-law, Michael Frederick, of Lawruk Machine and Tool Co. for eight years.

Louis belonged to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Disabled American Veterans and Bavarian Aid Society. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Louis loved his wife, children, grandchildren and sons-in-law.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2015, at Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Committal will be at Calvary Mausoleum with full military honors.
