Louis Robert Basciani

Louis Robert Basciani, 91 of Altoona passed away Thursday December 11, 2014 at UPMC Altoona.

He was born and raised in Altoona along with three brothers and three sisters on Crawford Ave. He was the son of the late Domenico and Antonetta (Martino) Basciani. He married an Altoona native, Rose Marie Weller the daughter of Walter and Emily (Rudolph) Weller. They were married for over forty-two years until her passing on September 10, 1997.

He is survived by two sons; Gary Basciani of Altoona and James Drass and wife Carmella (Albarano) of Lilly. A granddaughter Pamela Sossong and Husband Brett of Portage. A grandson Brian Drass and Wife Jolene (Riggleman) of Duncansville. Four Great-grandchildren, Kayley Sossong, and Laina, Julian, and Gracie Drass. A brother, Frank Basciani and A sister, Vera Basciani. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including a special nephew John Basciani and wife Judie of Altoona. Louis is also survived by recently discovered relatives in Italy.

He was preceded in death by two brothers Tony and Donald and Two sisters Fannie Ball and Anna Corona.

Louis attended the local schools, Washington Elementary, Roosevelt Jr. High and Altoona High School.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in General Patton's 3rd Army, 10th Infantry Division. He was a veteran of the battles of Normandy, Northern France, The Rhineland, The Ardennes, and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart, European-African-Middle Eastern Service medal with five campaign stars and the World War II victory Medal. When returning home he served his community again by working for the United States Postal Service as a Mail Handler and retired in 1983.

He enjoyed sports all his life including playing fast pitch softball in his younger years. In later years before ill health Louis enjoyed singing Karaoke in the local establishments.

Friends will be received from Noon till the 2pm funeral service Saturday December 13,2014 at the Santella Funeral Home. Internment at Calvary Cemetery. In Memory of Louis donations may be given to the Mount Carmel Restoration Fund.
