Michael X. DeStefano

March 7, 1928 – October 3, 2015

Michael X. DeStefano, 87 of San Antonio, Tx, former long time resident of Altoona passed away Saturday October 3, 2015 at Gentiva Hospice San Antonio, Tx.

He was born in Altoona son of the late Michael and Mary Concetta (Porazzo) DeStefano. He married Rose Marie Ricchetti.

Mike is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years Rose Marie; Two Daughters: Michelle(Tom) DeStefano-O'Bryan and Lisa(David) McCutchan both of San Antonio, Tx. A son: Stephen J.(Angie) DeStefano of Duncansville; Three Grandchildren: Nikki and Alexandra O'Bryan and Bryan Dimler; Two Step-Grandchildren: Levi and Peyton Huff. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was the last surviving member of his family. Mike was preceded in death by six sisters and six brothers.

Mike was a 1947 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School. In 1951 he received his Bachelor's Degree in English from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.. Mike then attended Rutgers University where in 1959 he received his Master's of Arts Degree.

He was an English teacher for over 35 years in the Spring Cove School District, including Roaring Spring High School. He taught English to college bound students and an elective English honors course. He also taught Latin, French, and American History. He was an advisor to the school newspaper, year book and dramatics. Mr. DeStefano was honored at the first Pennsylvania Salute to Teaching luncheon coordinated by the Pennsylvania Academy for the Profession of Teaching and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He also taught freshman English courses at the Penn State Altoona campus part time beginning in 1966 and continued for several years after his retirement from high school teaching.

He was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Altoona where he served as Eucharistic minister and lector for many years.

Mike enjoyed Reading, golf, and was a lifelong fan of Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Notre Dame Football. He was a member of Iron Masters Country Club, Roaring Spring

Friends will be received from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm Tuesday October 13, 2015 at the Santella Funeral Home where a vigil for the deceased will be held. An 11 am funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Therese of the Child Jesus on wednesday October 14, 2015. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery. In memory of Mike contributions may be given to St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church.
