Richard ‘Dick’ Frederick

Richard “Dick” Frederick, 85, Altoona, passed away Friday at Maybrook Hills Rehabil­itation and Healthcare Center.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Nick and Emma (DeTemple) Frederick. On Aug. 30, 1958, he married the late Sondra M. Ciccarella.

Surviving are a daughter, Michele (Ed) Smith; two sons: Mark (Bonnie) Frederick and Matthew (Mary) Frederick, all of Altoona; eight grandchildren: Marie, Emily, Luke and John Frederick, Joshua and Nathan Smith and Tiffany and Rachel Frederick; one great-grandson, Easton; and two siblings: Delores Dull and Tom Frederick, both in Ohio.

Dick was a 1951 graduate of Altoona High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He retired as a sales representative for Fleming Food Co., and he had previously worked as a manager for A & P Food Markets. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altoona.

Dick enjoyed Pittsburgh Steelers football and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was loved by all who knew him, especially his family, to whom he was so ever-present. In recent years, his grandchildren spent numerous hours at his home watching sports and helping wherever needed. One grandson summed it up best when he described Dick as his “best friend.”

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altoona. Committal will be at Calvary Mausoleum, Altoona, followed by military honors performed by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard.
