She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Canio and Andonia (Sangenaro) Laratonda. On Aug. 21, 1954, she married John Balestino at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 2003.

Surviving are two daughters: Brenda Meukel of Altoona (Troy Swab of Duncansville) and Lisa (Ken Sr.) Thompson of Altoona; four grandchildren: Vincent Jr. and Brandon Meukel and Ken Jr. and Katlynn Thompson; two great-grandchildren: Oakland and Kastro; and a sister, Jeanette DeGennaro of Altoona.

She was preceded in death by her siblings: Edith Laratonda, Carmel Marinello, Mary Gioiosa, Anna Marinello, Dolores Laratonda, Lucy Rispoli, Rose Williamson, and Susie Grennas; and a great-granddaughter, Ambrielle.

Helen was an Altoona High School graduate and retired as a clerk from Value City Department Store in 2000.

She enjoyed much of her time playing with her grandkids and great-grandkids.
