She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late James and Catherine (Tanneyhill) Balasco. She married Richard B. Dawson in Winchester, Va., and he preceded her in death in 1987.

She is survived by a daughter, Vicky (Terry) Schmitt; a son, Richard J. (Wanda) Dawson; five grandchildren: Joseph (Amber) Schmitt, Kelly Jo Perry, Jody (Mindy) Dawson, Shawn (Amanda) Dawson and Dr. Corey (Dr. Stephanie) Dawson; 11 great-grandchildren; a niece, Shirley (Fred) Baker; and a nephew, John Arnsparger.

She was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law: Paul and Grace Balasco; a sister, Anna Arnsparger; and a dear friend, Nunzio Ferrucci.

Helen was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School. She was a supervisor for Warnaco and later served as a senior companion.

Helen enjoyed playing Bingo, doing lottery scratch-offs and spending time with family and friends.

She previously had attended St. Joseph Church, Bellwood.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until the noon service on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, at Santella Funeral Home. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
