Jeanette May DeGennaro, 95, Duncansville, passed away Thursday at Garvey Manor. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Canio and Antonia (Sangenaro) Laratonda. On July 2, 1955, she married Albert DeGennaro and he preceded her in death in 1984. Her companion, George Zembower, also preceded her in death in 2012.
She is survived by a daughter, Regina (Dean) Miller; a son, Albert (Marisa) DeGennaro; four grandchildren: Alexandra, Aaron, Katie (James Connelly) and Christopher (Sarah Jane); and two great- grandchildren: Christopher and Siena.
She was the last surviving sister, preceded in death by: Rose, Edith, Lucy, Susie, Mary, Annie, Dolly, Helen and Carmel. She was also preceded in death by a daughter in law, Karen (Coletta) DeGennaro.
Jeanette was a 1950 graduate of Altoona High School. After graduation, she worked, along with three of her sisters, at the former Vincent Horwitz Shoe Company, before having children. Later on in her life, she worked for the Altoona Area School District in various positions at Washington-Jefferson, Logan, the Vo-Tech and Keith Junior High Schools.
She enjoyed cooking, where her lasagna was one of her specialties, and baking. Her family and grandchildren loved her chocolate chip and pizzelle cookies. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, and her favorite flowers were pink roses. She enjoyed meeting and talking with people of all ages and feeding her birds, especially the Blue Jays. But her greatest joy came from spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A special thank you to Garvey Manor Staff, First Floor D Wing.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
