Elvira DiFiore Obituary

Elvira "Alyce" (Leoni) DiFiore, 98, Altoona, passed away Sunday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Giuseppi and Anna (Moscata) Leoni. On April 17, 1941, she married the late John A. DiFiore.

Surviving are two daughters: Lana M. DiFiore of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Lorraine D. (Gary S.) Gasparovic of Virginia Beach, Va.; a grandson, John A. (Rachel) Mitchell of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and one great-granddaughter, Cora Mitchell. The family wishes to acknowledge Janet Ott, a caring friend and fellow bowler throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by five sisters: Mary, Lucretia, Yolanda, Jean and DeeDee; and two brothers: Pete and Louis.

Alyce was a lifelong resident of Altoona and a graduate of Altoona High School.

She attended church at the Assumption Chapel (Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church) and in later years at Garvey Manor's chapel.

Alyce was an avid bowler for several decades and was inducted into the Altoona Women's Bowling Association's first Hall of Fame in 2001. Over the years she held officer positions in the Altoona Women's Bowling Association and served as captain of her team. She reported weekly high bowler scores to Herb Werner of the Altoona Mirror for Bowler of the Week recognition and assisted him with the annual Bowler of the Year tournaments. Alyce enjoyed winning at gin rummy and bingo in her golden years.

The family thanks the entire staff of Garvey Manor for their exemplary care and love for Alyce. She expressed daily her appreciation for the care team, including social workers and activities staff, who made up her "forever home" family. The family also wishes to acknowledge Dr. Anthony J. Bartkowiack for his guidance in managing their mother's care.

Recognizing current restrictions due to COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no viewing or visitation. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Santella Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Alyce's memory to Garvey Manor Nursing Home, 1037 South Logan Blvd, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
