James H. Weakland Sr., 80, Altoona, passed away Wednesday at UPMC Altoona, following a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Vincent G. and Eleanor (Tippett) Weakland. He married Wanda Uliano on Sept. 20, 1962.
He is survived by his loving wife; two daughters: Eleanor (Richard) Herbster and Kimberly (Thomas) Carrieri; four grandchildren: Jacob Herbster, Nicole (Jamey) Brumbaugh, Daniel Carrieri, and Madison Weakland; a sister, Linda Wolfe; and a brother, Richard Weakland.
Jim was preceded in death by a son, James H. Weakland Jr.
Jim retired in 2006 as a self-employed route salesman for Benzel’s Pretzels with 45 years of service.
He was involved in various clubs in the Altoona area. He was a member, and Vice-President, of the Fraternal Order of Clubs and most notably served as a Trustee at the Bavarian Aid Society, where he was a life-long member.
Jim was an avid sports fan, hunter, and fisherman. He was a life-long Pirates baseball, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Penn State football fan. He spent many years playing, coaching, or umpiring City league softball.
His family was his pride and joy. He was often seen in the stands or in the audience cheering on his children and grandchildren during their sports, music, or theater endeavors.
Friends will be received from 3-7 pm, Sunday Oct. 24, 2021 in the Santella Funeral Home. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 2pm, Monday Oct. 25, 2021 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. At the request of the family, masks are strongly encouraged during the visitation.
