Joseph D. Lioy, 76, Tipton, formerly of Altoona, passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Daniel A. and Rosie (Spinazzola) Lioy. On February 12, 1966, he married Anne Zetler at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years; a daughter Jennifer (John) Estep; two grandchildren, who were the twinkle in his eyes: Johnna Rose and Joseph-James Rian; sister-in-laws, Henrietta and Vera; many nephews and nieces; and his good friend and care giver, James Estep.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jordan Estep; four brothers: Thomas (Lorene, Pat), Gene, John (Betty), and Daniel; and a sister Netty (William) Freed.
Joseph was a graduate of Altoona High School, was honorably discharged from the US Army, and retired in 2005 after 38 years service from SKF Industries.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He was also a member of the San Donato Club and the Bavarian Aid Society.
Joe loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, making sure to see them everyday and large family gatherings celebrating birthdays and holidays.
Joe also had a love for baseball, bowling, and golf. He played in the Greater City Baseball league as a pitcher in the 1960s and 70s, for the Eldorado team. He was rookie of the year in 1964. He enjoyed bowling on many teams at Holiday bowl and the Bavarian Aid Society and golfing trips after he retired.
Friends will be received from 4-7pm, Thursday Oct. 15, 2020 in the Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30am, Friday Oct. 16, 2020 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors.
