Lawrence Massaro Jr. Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Massaro Jr., 89, passed away at UPMC Altoona on the morning of May 29, 2020. He was born in Altoona on June 6, 1930, the son of Lawrence Massaro Sr. and Catherine Massaro.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Olive (Weyandt) Massaro; his sons: Lawrence “Mel” Massaro III (Judy) and Patrick “Rick” Massaro (Jamie); five grandchildren: Laura “Nikki” Massaro Kauffman (Christopher), Catherine Massaro, Christopher Massaro (Karen), Lisa (Massaro) Noel (Dane) and Matthew Massaro (Amanda); and eight great-grandchildren: Collin Noel, Karenna Kauffman, Luke Noel, Jude Kauffman, Samantha Massaro, Elizabeth Massaro, Addison Massaro and Liam Massaro.

He was preceded in death by an older sister, Rose Harella (Massaro); and a younger brother, James Massaro, who passed as an infant.

Larry was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and attended services at the Assumption Chapel.

Larry attended Sacred Heart School, Adams Elementary School, and Roosevelt Junior High School, and would speak fondly of his years at Roosevelt. As a young man, Larry served in the U. S. Navy from 1948-52, with six months in Korea. He worked in management for the Altoona plant of the Butterick Co. Inc., until his retirement in the 1980s. As an adult, assisted by his employer, he was able to attend industrial engineering classes through Penn State University.

Larry treated visitors like family. He made sure no one left his home hungry, with his offers to fry an egg, make a steak or share some tomatoes from his garden.

Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and dreamer. During a previous health scare, when asked what year it was, he gave the nurse the year he was married. When asked about it later, he said, “That year is always on my mind.” He taught his kids, his grandkids, and his great-grandkids that they can make anything and be anything with a clever idea and the right craft supplies.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no service.
