Michael Colombo, 88, of Altoona, passed away Tuesday at UPMC Altoona. Born to Cesar and Philomena, Michael was the youngest of 11 children.
Beloved by his family, he is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Helen (Delricco), two children, Jim (Gabrielle) Colombo and Rita (Chip) Dart; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mike loved sports. He was a basketball coach in the 60s at St. Mark’s Elementary School, and never missed a Steelers, Pirates or Penn State game.
Often referred to as “The Mayor of Altoona,” Mike seemed to know everyone and their family trees. He and his wife, Helen, co-owned The Market Basket grocery store on Fifth Avenue from 1963-95.
Friends will be received from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., immediately following the visitation.
Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
