Michael C. "Mike" Verilla

Michael “Mike” Verilla, 90, formerly of Altoona, passed away in Danvers, MA after a brief illness on October 12, 2023.

Mike was born in Altoona and was the son of the late Anthony and Aurelia (Corso) Verilla. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Louise (Ianieri), who was the love of his life.

Surviving Mike are a son, Richard (Christina) and two daughters: Chastain Scott and Monica Winter (Robert); four grandchildren: Nathan Verilla (Edva), Kailen Gordon (Andrew), Hadley Winter, and Griffin Winter; and two great-grandsons: Jack and Theo Gordon. Also surviving is a sister, Judythe Lenhart (Jerry) and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister Lorraine; and three brothers, John, Anthony, and Eugene. He was a longtime employee of Norfolk Southern (Penn Central and later Conrail), where he worked for more than 40 years.

Mike had an incredible zest for life and was beloved by countless close friends and extended family. He greatly enjoyed being around people and lending a hand to anyone who needed it.

He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, and his enjoyment of RV camping, Penn State football games, trips to Myrtle Beach, exploring auctions and flea markets, and traveling.

Mike was a dedicated volunteer at the Altoona Veterans Medical Center and in his later years was an active member of the First Church and The Lighthouse Men’s Fellowship.

Friends will be received from 10am until the 11am funeral service on Thursday, October 19, 2023, in the Santella Funeral Home, 1106 8th Ave., Pastor John Collins officiating. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
