Nancy E. Hayes, 84, Altoona, passed away Sunday at her home. She was born in Pinecroft, daughter of the late Raymond C. and Mary Catherine (Grassmyer) O’Donnell. She later married Carl D. Hayes and he preceded her in death in 1969.
She is survived by a daughter, Marlene (Randy) Horton; a son, James (Michele) Hayes; 7 grandchildren: Jamie Horton, Nathan Bowser, Megan Albright, Cameron and Brent Gehret; and Daniel and Joshua Hayes; 3 great-grandchildren: Aubreigh, Kaley, and Adalyn; a son-in-law, David Gehret; and extended family of in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Nancy was preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn Gehret; 3 sisters: Donna Feathers, Madeline Trimarco, and Esther Taylor; and a nephew, Tyler Gehret.
Nancy was a 1955 Tyrone High School graduate. She retired from the Altoona Hospital after 23 years as a telephone operator.
She enjoyed the numerous activities, parties and cherished friends at the Graystone Apartments. She also enjoyed spending time with family, especially her great-granddaughters.
Nancy was a volunteer and member for the St. Vincent DePaul Society food bank and the Widows Social Club.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Family Hospice, especially her team nurse, April Sell, Lynne, and caregiver, Renee.
Friends will be received from 9am to 10:15am today, Aug. 17, 2021 in the Santella Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated following the visitation at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
