Richard W. “Dick” Ramey, 82, Altoona, formerly of Owensboro, Kentucky, passed away after a month-long battle with COVID-19 with family by his side.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Annie (DiRemiggio) Claycomb and was raised by the late Eugene and Jeanne Figurelle. He married Willie (Riddle), who preceded him in death in 2005.
He is survived by his godson Wayne Figurelle (Liz) of Hollidaysburg; a brother Charles Claycomb (Dina) of Oregon; cousins who were like siblings, Rebecca Gettle (Greg) of Lebanon, Kathy Gates (Brad) of Virginia, Eugene Figurelle Jr. (Ruth Ann) of Altoona, Ann Marie McGeary (Bruce) of Virginia, and Renee Figurelle of Virginia. Affectionately known as “Uncle Dick”, he is also survived by numerous cousins who were like nieces, nephews.
Dick was a 1955 Altoona High School graduate. He entered the military in 1958 and served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps until 1962 with honorable discharge. Later, Dick worked as a salesman and farmer in Kentucky.
In 1957, Dick, along with his teammates won the National Amateur Baseball Federation Championship. In 2008, he and his team were inducted into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame.
Dick loved watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, Penn State Football, and the Kentucky Wildcats Basketball. He would never pass up a card game; but especially enjoyed a good game of Cribbage. Dick enjoyed listening to country music and would often sing along or shed a tear from a memory of a time gone by. With a very outgoing, vivacious personality, Dick would have meaningful interactions with everyone he met.
But most of all, Dick adored his family. With a large extended family, Dick loved a house full of family; enjoying good food, drinks, stories, and laughter. When asked what his favorite memories were; most of them included family reunions, weddings, graduations and holidays. Dick lived his life to the fullest and will be missed by all who loved him.
The family would like to thank Dr. Morgan Figurelle and Hannah Figurelle RN/BSN for their attentiveness to the health care of Dick during his hospital stay.
Due to social distancing restrictions, there will be no viewing. A Celebration of Life gathering will be planned for a later time. Committal with military service with his extended family will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday, December 9th at Calvary Cemetery in Altoona. Fr. Dugan of Our Lady of Lourdes will be officiating. Arrangements are being made by Santella Funeral Home.
In Lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Attn: Development 875 N. Randolf Street, Ste. 225 Arlington, VA 22203.
