Robert "John" Scalice Obituary

Robert "John" Scalice Sr., 77, Altoona, left this world to be with loved ones who passed before him on February 24, 2024 at UPMC Altoona, after a long fought battle with chronic illness. John was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Spirdigliozzi) Scalice, both formerly of Altoona.

He was a 1964 graduate of Altoona Area High School and a member of both the Lakemont Lions Club and The Bavarian Aid Society. John was baptized at Mt. Carmel Church in Altoona and last belonged to The Altoona Alliance Church. He was preceded in death by two sons: Robert J. Scalice Jr. and Gregg A. Scalice, along with both parents; three sisters: Maryanne Scalice, Rose-Marie Hansey, and Jeanette Scalice.

Surviving are his spouse of 57 years, Shirley Y. (Stewart) Scalice; a brother Frank (Linda) Scalice, of Altoona; daughter Karen Scalice; 7 grandchildren: Andrew (Caitlyn) Scalice, Travis (Bailey) Scalice, Joshua, Zachary, Abigayle, Anna-Grace and Nicolas, all of Altoona; as well as two great grandchildren, to whom he adored dearly, Kayden and Mason Scalice; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins,

John worked in the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Food-Service for over 20 years. Before medically retiring in 1998, he worked for Blair County Meals on wheels for a number of years before slowing down to enjoy his growing family. John was an avid family man who loved to host cookouts on summer days, and home cooked family meals on Sunday nights. In the summer you could find him at most any baseball field in the area catching a game and heckling umpires while supporting his grandkids and great grandkids. In the fall and winter, he was glued to both Penn State and Steelers football on the weekends. Cooking and collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia were ways he would pass time as well as helping to maintain the home to bring family and friends in for entertainment. His famous home-made spaghetti and ham pot pie were his signature dishes to which brought family in from afar.

John most of all loved company. He was at his happiest with friends or family over, as long as The Price is Right wasn't on. He was an icon for many; friends, family or a passing stranger. His personality was second to none and one many will never forget.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. until the funeral service at 6 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2024, at Santella Funeral Home, Pastor Troy Ferguson officiating.
